Yeast is composed of living micro–organisms which all work together to reproduce themselves and enlarge their community. It aids primarily in helping breads rise during baking, making them larger and softer. Yeast growth is repressed by salt.
Yeast isn’t eaten alone, but it would taste terrible if it were. Aside from enhancing bread and other various baked goods, it’s sometimes used to make condiment–like food spreads.
Yeast became an official snack on May 24th 2012.
