Shallot can be referred to as a type of onion, which leaves the odds for popularity stacked slightly against it. It looks sort of like a clove of garlic that tried transforming into a purple onion, but failed halfway.
Shallot tastes a lot like onion (not very good), but perhaps milder. When fried and used to flavor other foods, it performs rather nicely.
