Quinoa is a type of grain (for all intents and purposes) that has, for a very long time, taken a backseat to the more popular grains such as rice and cereal. Culturally, it is popular in creative student communities who are interested in rejecting the norm, and wish to embrace culture from the comfort of their dormitory potlucks.
Quinoa tastes alright. It is normally served as a savory dish. Its bead–like texture can be very fun, as the eater can pretend that they are eating spoonfuls of caviar, without adverse effects to their checking account or the fish population.
Quinoa became an official snack on June 11th 2012.
