Coconut is a fruit that is actually a gigantic nut. It sports a shell so thick that it’s nearly incomprehensible to imagine breaking it open for the white “meat” within. Coconut is popular because it’s frequently pictured in the palm trees of picturesque tropical locations. Coconut was the inspiration for the modern day bowling ball.
After coconut gets broken open, its sweet white meat is harvested for oil, milk, juice, and raw consumption. Coconut tastes good, but has a very particular flavor that some are partial to. It’s found in raw form (grated) on an array of candies and desserts.
Coconut became an official snack on May 23rd 2012.
